2010 SEASON
2010 JMFA Season recap: The Grizzlies began the season winning 3 of 4 games of the preseason Kickoff Classic, against tough AYL competition, but faced an early first round exit from the playoffs 3 months later. We finished 3-5 in the regular season, but made some great strides with the new players we added, including 4 new starters on the offensive line. Our season was filled with highs and lows...a true roller coast ride. Our 9 TD's called back because of penalties has to be some kind of youth football record! We had 4 different boys carry the football more than 60 times each, showing the true talented kids we have. On defense, Matt Canino & Shane Compton tied for the lead in tackles with 64, and Matthew Ells & Zayne Becker tied for the lead with 11 Tackles for Loss. On offense, Mikey Sanchez had 480 yards rushing for a whopping 7.2 yard per carry average, and also led the team with 4 catches; Matt Canino had a team leading 5 rushing TDs; and DJ Davis led us with 62 passing yards. We also enjoyed a great bus trip to CU to see the CU Buffs vs. K-State Wildcats football game, and we were joined at our season-ending banquet by Broncos punter Britton Colquitt, and 2 members of the US Marine Corps, as we donated a ton of Toys for Tots!

GRIZZLIES WENT PINK TO SUPPORT
BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH!

The Grizzlies sported Pink Ribbon helmet decals, and pink wristbands, socks and shoelaces for 2 big games during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The Pink accessories were compliments of Coach Paul and his wife, Sheila, and Shane's mom, Carolyn, as a show of support for those suffering from, and those survivors of breast cancer. It also serves as a reminder that the key to surviving this disease is clear: early detection. Thank you to all who supported this effort!

Week 1 - Grizzlies - 0 Arvada Buffaloes - 16
Captains: Jacob Callahan, Mikey Sanchez, Matthew Canino, Colin Fuller, & Benjamin Morrin
Our boys played hard all day, but came up short with a 16-0 opening game loss to the Arvada Buffaloes. The Buffs scored all 16 points in the first 8 plays of the game, with Coach Walt's Grizzly "D" shutting them down and shutting them out for the rest of the game. Our offense struggled to sustain drives, and in the red zone. On the day, we rushed for a 2 year low of 57 yards and threw 3 interceptions.

Special recognition goes out to 2 players: Matthew Canino who "brought it!" all day long on offense, defense and special teams; and Zayne Becker who was a terror on the defensive line, racking up 3 sacks on the day! The Buffaloes (1-0) finished the 2009 season with a record of 8-2 overall, and they are a very well coached, disciplined team.

Week 2 - Grizzlies - 26 Arvada Panthers - 6
Captains: Shane Compton, Zayne Becker, Mikey Sanchez, & Matthew Canino
Our boys played "Grizzly Football" on Saturday, and roared back to a 26-6 win over the Arvada Panthers. The offensive line, led by Matthew Lopez, Vince DiFeo, Phoenix DaLuz, Benjamin Morrin, Jacob Callahan, Matthew Ells, Connor Florence and JT Thomas opened up holes all day long, leading us to 133 yards rushing and 3 rushing TDs. Matt Canino led the way on both sides of the ball, racking up 63 yards rushing and adding 11 tackles on defense, including 2 tackles for loss. David Graham has his best game as a Grizzly, rushing for 29 yards on 6 carries, including a TD and PAT, but also had an electrifying 30 yard TD run called back due to a holding penalty, one of 3 TDs the Grizzlies had called back. On defense, the Grizzlies pitched a shutout, as the only Panthers score came on a kickoff return. The Griz "D" also put some points on the board, thanks to an amazing 45 yard interception return for a TD by Shane Compton, who finished the day with 10 tackles. Colin Fuller & "Big Ben" Morrin each had 3 tackles for loss in what was a great team effort.

Week 3 - Grizzlies - 26 Wheat Ridge Farmers - 12
Captains: David Graham, Vince DiFeo, Benjamin Morrin, & Matthew Ells
Our boys went on the road in week 3 and knocked off an oversized (5 Patch Players!) Farmers team 26-12, despite trailing 6-0 after the opening drive, and again, 12-7. Our offensive line drove those big kids out of the way to lead the way for Shane Compton to score on a great 23 yard run, Mikey Sanchez to score on a 23 run after catching a pass behind the line of scrimmage, and Matt Canino to punch it in the endzone twice, from 2 yards out, and a yard away. David Graham and Jared Olson also had great games toting the rock for the Griz. On defense, it was once again a great team effort. Shane led the way with 9 tackles, with DJ Davis & Matt Canino adding 8 a piece, followed by Jake Macias, Mikey & Benjamin Morrin's 7 each. Mikey also added a big interception to thwart a PAT attempt, while Jake "The Snake" led us with 2 tackles for loss. Special mention to Connor Florence who came up with his first "sack"! All of the Grizzlies played great this day, leading the way to another GrizWin!

Week 4 - Grizzlies - 31 H.R. Mustangs - 38, OVERTIME
Captains: Mikey Sanchez, Shane Compton, Vince DiFeo, & Connor Florence
WOW! The Grizzlies dropped an overtime thriller to the Highlands Ranch Mustangs, 38-31 in JMFA action. The boys fought hard each and every play, and fought tooth and nail. Our offense put up over 200 yards rushing, and scored on all but 2 possessions. The story of this game, however, was a pair of long TDs by Mikey Sanchez (35 yards & 48 yards on a kickoff return) called back because of penalties. We also had 2 tough calls on PAT conversions, where it appeared that DJ Davis & Mikey crossed the goalline with the ball. Mikey led the way on offense, finishing with over 200 yards in total offense, Matthew Canino, who had 2 TD's (12 & 26), Jeffrey Potts who had a great 10 yard TD scamper, and our entire offensive line. On defense, we were led by Matt Canino's 12 tackes, including a tackle-for-loss ("TFL"); Shane Compton's 11 tackles; and 8 tackles each by DJ & Jake Macias.

Week 5 - Grizzlies - 6 Arvada Bulldogs - 26
Captains: Matthew Canino, Mikey Sanchez, Shane Compton, & Matthew Lopez
The Grizzlies dropped a heartbreaking 26-6 game to the Arvada Bulldogs, despite opening the game with an impressive 8 play TD drive to jump up, 6-0. The Griz trailed just 13-6 at the half, before the Bulldogs took advantage of a short field twice in the second half. The Bulldogs have lost just 1 game over the past 2 seasons, that in week 6 of the 2009 season to the Grizzlies.

Sat., Oct. 9, 2010
Week 6 - Grizzlies - 13 Lakewood Tigers - 27
Captains: Jeremy Sheehy, DJ Davis, Vince DiFeo, & Phoenix DaLuz
The Grizzlies dropped another heartbreaker, 27-13, at the hands of the 4-2 Lakewood Tigers. 4 different Grizzlies had 10 carries, and a total of 7 different GrizKids carried the ball on the day, for 132 yards rushing. David Graham popped a 10 yard TD run, and added the PAT as well, while Shane Compton added a bruising 7 yard run for the Grizzlies' other TD. Kudos to offensive guard Vincent DiFeo, who played hurt all day, and played like a warrior for us once again, and to DJ Davis for filling in at the Jet position to give us our best perimeter blocking of the season. Defensively, the Grizzlies were led by Zayne Becker's 2 Tackles-For-Loss (TFL) and 1 Forced Fumble (recovered by Jared Olson). Jake "The Snake" Macias and Jacob Callahan also added a TFL for the Griz.

Week 7 - Grizzlies - 0 South Jeffco Rebels - 26
Captains: Jeffrey Potts, Jared Olson, Zayne Becker, & Vince DiFeo,
The 2009 Carnation Bowl finalist South Jeffco Rebels handed the Grizzlies a 26-0 loss Saturday at Easton Park. The Grizzlies, who had been averaging 160 yards per game rushing, was held to an all-time low 7 yards rushing on 33 carries. On offense, David "the Terminator" Graham was the top rusher with 13 yards on 8 carries, and was never tackled behind the line of scrimmage. On defense, the Grizzlies were led by Matthew Ells' 4 tackles-for-loss and he and Mikey Sanchez paced the Grizzlies with 8 total tackles on the day. Special recognition goes to Colin Fuller for a great play in coverage and an interception to thwart a Rebels drive in the 2nd half.

Sat., Oct. 23, 2010
Week 8 - Grizzlies - 14 Green Mtn. Rams - 0
Captains: Max Taylor, Evan Ross, Matthew Ells, & Phoenix DaLuz
The Grizzlies re-commited to starting this "Second Season" now, with the regular season finale against the Green Mountain Rams, and it showed. The Griz shut out the Rams, 14-0, and dominated their opponent all day long. Behind a stellar offensive line (Ben Morrin, Phoenix DaLuz, Matthew Lopez, Vince DiFeo, Connor Florence, Jacob Callahan, Matthew Ells, Justyn Classen, Jake Thomas, Zayne Becker), the Grizzlies opened up the day with a methodical 18 play, 57 yard drive topped off with a 1 yard TD plunge by Matthew Canino. Shane Compton added the PAT and the Grizzlies never looked back. On offense, the Grizzlies running game was back in full swing, rushing the ball for 193 yards on 43 carries, with 2 TD and 2 PAT. Shane Compton had 88 yards on 13 carries; Mikey Sanchez had 76 yards on just 9 carries, including an electrifying 38 yard scamper down the sidelines. David Graham bulled his way for 24 yards on 12 carries, including a PAT. The Grizzlies also took to the air, hitting on a 12 yard TD pass, from DJ Davis to Matthew Canino, only to have it called back for having 12 men on the field. That reception was one of 2 called back on the day. Defensively, the Grizzlies were led by Jeffrey Potts' big interception and 5 tackles; Shane's 7 tackles; Matthew Ells' sack and fumble recovery; and tackles-for-loss by Jake Thomas and Matt Canino. The entire defense pulled together for a great team effort in getting the shut out, great momentum heading into the playoffs!
